“Age Later” with this Easy 3-Step Skin Care Diet

Image

STEP 1:

DIET

Follow your daily recommended ingredients of:

  • AHA’s/BHA’s – Exfoliation/cell turnover
  • Retionol – Collagen building
  • Peptides – Building blocks of skin
  • Stem Cells – Cell life extension
  • Lightening Agents – Even skin tone
  • Anti-Oxidants – Nutrition & Balance
  • SPF Moisturizers – UVA/UVB protection

STEP 2:

EXERCISE

The skin needs a personal trainer to get it to a healthy level. A series of 6 professional resurfacing treatments is needed every 2 weeks. (Microdermabrasion or Chemical Peels – superficial to deep)

STEP 3:

MAINTENANCE

The skin cells turn over and build up every 28-40 days, depending on age.  Therefore, a maintenance resurfacing treatment is recommended every month to six weeks for optimal skin health.

Q. WHY A SKIN CARE DIET?

A: In order for your skin to age later, we must add ingredients to the skin daily for healthy, balanced skin.  Healthy Skin is Beautiful Skin.

The skin is the largest organ in the body.  As we age, all physiological mechanisms slow down.  The skin needs certain ingredients to prevent malnutrition of the skin, which results in sagging, wrinkles, and excessive brown spots on the skin.

Stratum Corneum (dead skin cells):

AHA’s/BHA’s exfoliate dead skin

Epidermis (melanocytes, keratinocytes):

Lightening agents keep skin spot-free and even.  AHA’s/BHA’s are keratinolytics that keep pores clog free and slow down oil production.  Antioxidants prevent oxidative damage to the cells within epidermis.

DERMIS (fibroblasts, collagen, elastin, blood supply):

Retinols plump up collagen.  Stem cells extend cell life. Peptides signal collagen production and inhibit muscle contraction.  SPF protection inhibits elastin fibers from breaking and causing sagging skin.

Fantasy Tan – A safe, custom airbrush tan!!

Image

Summer time is here!!

When I think of summer, one of the first things that comes to mind is having a great tan.  I remember summers spent at the pool or beach with friends and family working to achieve the darkest tan possible. Now as a licensed esthetician, I shake my head in disbelief when I think of all the countless years I spent exposing my unprotected skin to the sun’s deadly rays. I didn’t realize until I was an adult that having a tan doesn’t mean that the skin is healthy. It’s actually the exact opposite. Tanned skin equals damaged, premature aging skin and can lead to cancer. I didn’t realize until I was an adult that having a tan doesn’t mean that the skin is healthy. It’s actually the exact opposite. Tanned skin equals damaged, premature aging skin and can lead to cancer.

For those of us who love the look of having a tan, but don’t want to damage our skin, thankfully there’s spray tanning. Spray tans are a great solution for people who want to look like they’re tan without damaging their skin. Spray tans are quick and won’t cause cancer, fine lines or wrinkles. They can last anywhere from five to seven days, depending on how the skin is cared for after the tan. A spray tan will fade a lot faster if the skin is constantly submerged in water or if its been exfoliated on a regular basis.

Fantasy Airbrush Tanning:

How does Fantasy Tan work?

A trained professional will spray the special tanning formula onto your body. The amino acids in your skin will respond naturally to the DHA and other complementary ingredients in the tanning formula to produce the most beautiful sunless tan you’ve ever seen.

Fantasy Tan eliminates all of the mess and problems associated with tanning creams and spray tanning booths. There is no streaky mess, orange palms, or dirty looking knees and elbows. This a personal treatment tailored to your individual needs. No two people are alike, and your spray tan should suit you and your skin type – so Fantasy Tan comes in five gorgeous colors!

Frequently asked Questions

How long should my tan last?

The average is 7-10 days of color. Factors such as skin type, activities, and maintenance can cause your results to vary. Fantasy Tan retail products – Hydrating Daily Moisturizer, Body Scrub, Mild Cleansing Body Wash, Tan Extender and Personal Bronzer are available for purchase.

Is it safe?

Yes. The main ingredient in our sunless tanning product is (DHA). DHA is a simple non-toxic sugar. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. DHA is FDA approved.

How long does a tanning session take?

On average, a full body session can take 15-30 minutes.

The cosmetic bronzer may rub off on clothing; however it will wash out of most fabrics except nylons or silks.

How can I maintain a great color all year ‘round?

Your tan will start to fade as your skin normally exfoliates.

Once your tan has completely faded, it is ok to start the preparation and treatment all over again.

Can I tan when I’m pregnant?

There are no known side effects from the application of Fantasy Tan. As a precaution, if you are pregnant you should always consult with your physician or other qualified health care provider before receiving a spray tan or any beauty or skin care application.

Before a client comes in for a spray tan service, I always advise them of five ways they can ensure that they will receive the best spray tan of their life and how they can help make it last as long as possible.

1. On the night before or the day of receiving a spray tan, exfoliate the skin with an oil-free body exfoliant or exfoliating mitts or gloves. Don’t use anything oil-based. Sugar exfolaints are great because they tend to be natural, gentle and moisturizing but they are terrible for spray tans. The extra moisture will cause the tanning solution to run on the skin, leading to a streaky and splotchy spray tan. No bueno.

2. On the day of receiving a spray tan, avoid heavy body lotions or oil. The extra moisturizer ion from a heavy lotion or oil will not allow the tanning solution to stick to the skin’s surface evenly. You can use these products, 24 hours after the service.

3. Avoid perfume and deodorant on the day of the service. These products will interfere with the tan just like a heavy body lotion, body oil or oil-based exfoliant.

4. After receiving a spray tan, it’s important to allow the solution to dry thoroughly on the skin as it develops. After the tan, wear dark, loose fitting clothing and flip flops. Black yoga pants, roomy t-shirts and tracksuits are the best way to go. Don’t wear tight jeans, leggings, tight tops, socks or lace-up shoes after a tan. The friction of the clothing can rub on the skin, preventing the tan from not drying all the way and creating a splotchy and streaky tan.

5. Spray tanner needs anywhere from eight to ten hours to fully develop. Avoid any excessive sweating after a tan so hit up the gym before the service. The best time of the day to get a spray tan is after work, before bed. Sleep overnight with the tanner on the skin and then shower in the morning.

How To make your favorite mascara last up to 3 times longer…..

You know when your nice smooth new mascara turns dry and crusty and clumpy no matter what you do? Bummer is, it may not even be very old (…but remember to dispose of mascara in a timely manner. You don’t wanna know what icky stuff hides itself in old cosmetics. Bleck.).

Image

So what’s a frugal gal to do? Add a little sterile saline solution (or eye drops if you don’t wear contacts) and your mascara is as good as new!

Just a few drops will do ya. Between 2-4 drops depending on how dry the formula is and how much mascara you think might still be in there. You want to freshen it up, not make it drippy.

Image

Stir and pump the mascara wand a bit to shake up the formula, voila! No more clumps!

Do UV Sun Rays Go Through Windows?

The answer is yes!!

This is a really important issue for anyone sitting in direct sunlight that comes through a window. Normal glass blocks all of UVB but allows UVA to come through. Both of these rays are harmful.  Remember:

UVB

  • UVB is considered the main sunburn ray
  • It causes skin cancer and sun damage
  • The SPF in a sunscreen tells you how well the product protects you from UVB

UVB, the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, tends to damage the skin’s more superficial epidermal layers. It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and a contributory role in tanning and photoaging. Its intensity varies by season, location, and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10 AM and 4 PM from April to October. However, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin year-round, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice, which bounce back up to 80 percent of the rays so that they hit the skin twice. UVB rays do not significantly penetrate glass. Protect yourself from UV radiation, both indoors and out. Always seek the shade outdoors, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM. And since UVA penetrates glass, consider adding flat, tinted UV-protective film to your car’s side and rear windows as well as to house and business windows. This film blocks up to 99.9 percent of UV radiation and lets in up to 80 percent of visible light.

UVA

  • Is the UV ray in tanning beds
  • It penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB playing a big role in sun damage including wrinkles
  • It can cause skin cancer
  • The SPF on sunscreens tells you nothing about whether the product protects you from UVA.  Look for sunscreens labeled ‘broad spectrum’.

Most of us are exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime. UVA rays account for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. Although they are less intense than UVB, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent. They are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year, and can penetrate clouds and glass.

UVA, which penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB, has long been known to play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling (photoaging), but until recently scientists believed it did not cause significant damage in areas of the epidermis (outermost skin layer) where most skin cancers occur. Studies over the past two decades, however, show that UVA damages skin cells called keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, where most skin cancers occur. (Basal and squamous cells are types of keratinocytes.) UVA contributes to and may even initiate the development of skin cancers.

UVA is the dominant tanning ray, and we now know that tanning, whether outdoors or in a salon, causes cumulative damage over time. A tan results from injury to the skin’s DNA; the skin darkens in an imperfect attempt to prevent further DNA damage. These imperfections, or mutations, can lead to skin cancer.

Tanning booths primarily emit UVA. The high-pressure sunlamps used in tanning salons emit doses of UVA as much as 12 times that of the sun. Not surprisingly, people who use tanning salons are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma, and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. According to recent research, first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent.

Prevention Guidelines:

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Usa a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

Do some sunscreen ingredients and products really work better than others?

A definite yes!!

Two ingredients favored are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They protect us over this broad range of ultraviolet A (UVA) and UVB.  And these ingredients don’t tend to break down as easily as other sunscreen ingredients.

UVB rays cause sunburn and skin cancer; UVA rays cause aging and likely skin cancer. Because both cause damage to the skin.  It’s important to pick a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection that shields out both types of rays.

Many active ingredients in sunscreens break down in the sun, wiping out protection.  And some sunscreens only provide protection against ultraviolet B.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are classified by experts as physical blockers, which work by reflecting rays away from the skin. Other sunscreen ingredients, such as oxybenzone, are chemical blockers, which work by absorbing rays and preventing them from penetrating.

The physical blocking sunscreens are by far the better sunscreens vs. the chemical sunscreens.

There are currently 17 active ingredients approved by the FDA for use in sunscreens. These filters fall into two broad categories: chemical and physical. Most UV filters are chemical: They form a thin, protective film on the surface of the skin and absorb the UV radiation before it penetrates the skin. The physical sunscreens are insoluble particles that reflect UV away from the skin. Most sunscreens contain a mixture of chemical and physical active ingredients.

How to get rid of Blackheads

When I do facials I find that most people, no matter what their age, have blackheads, especially on their noses.  Luckily there are a few different methods for getting rid of blackheads but persistence and patience is needed in order to see results.

What Are Blackheads?

Simply put blackheads form when sebum (oil) and dead skin cells clog the inside of the sebaceous (oil) glands and form a cyst.  Blackheads are open comedones, the word doctors use for blackheads and whiteheads, which means that the dermis has not covered the clogged pore over, and the comdone oxidizes in the air and turns black.  Just because the comedone is black does not mean that it is dirty or that there is dirt there.  This type of blockage starts deep inside the pore and builds up until it reaches the surface.   Blackheads typically grow to between 2 to 4 millimeters and can remain in place for months and even years.

What Causes Blackheads?

There are few different contributing factors to the formation of blackheads.  One is that your body is producing excessive amounts of sebum or oil and that oil does not exit the pore properly.  Another contributing factor are dead skin cells that also do not exit the pore properly – rather they stick together and get stuck in your pores.  This, by the way, can be a genetic condition.  Certain make-up and skincare products can contain ingredients that can contribute to clogged pores.  Not removing all your make-up at night certainly doesn’t help to keep your pores clear of debris.

How Can You Get Rid of Blackheads?

Two things are important to remember about blackheads when you go to treat them.  One is that the oil and dead skin cells that are blocking your pore and have lead to the formation of a blackhead have accumulated deep inside your pore so you need pretty powerful ingredients that penetrate deeply into pores in order to dislodge the stuck debris.  Simply cleaning your face with a scrub or rubbing away at your blackheads will not help dislodge them since the debris is stuck deep down in your pore.  Secondly, as I wrote above blackheads can stick around for months or even years which means that you need patience and persistence when you want to remove them.

The two best ingredients for getting rid of blackheads are salicylic acid and retinoids.  Salicylic acid is oil soluble which means it can penetrate into your clogged pore and help to dissolve the oil trapped in the pore.  Retinoids help to regulate skin cell turnover and prevent the dead skin cells from sticking together and staying in your pores.  Many people might find it too strong to use products simultaneously with those ingredients so I would choose one or the other ingredient.   But be sure to be patient!  The blackheads formed over time and it will take time to remove them.

Should You Squeeze Your Blackheads?

It is extremely tempting to squeeze your blackheads, but if done improperly you can actually cause quite a bit of damage to your skin.  Ideally if you want to get rid of blackheads go get a facial.  During a facial the esthetician properly prepares your skin for extractions and then knows how much to squeeze and for how long.  For instance, don’t go squeezing your skin for more than 10 minutes since that will just end up causing trauma to the skin in the end.  If you insist of doing your own extractions at home I suggest doing them immediately after getting out of the shower and after having washed your face.  Make sure your hands are cleans and wrap your fingers in clean tissues.  Squeeze gently and don’t keep poking at your face for more than 10 minutes.  If you can’t dislodge the contents of a clogged pore easily leave it alone!  Pushing and pushing will just damage your skin.  Finish your extractions by wiping your face with toner or witch hazel oil.
